What the chip actually does
When you turn the key, a coil around the ignition energises the chip and reads its code. Consequently the immobiliser either releases or blocks the engine. Furthermore, the chip needs no battery, since the coil powers it. Therefore a transponder key that turns the lock but will not start the car has a programming problem rather than a cutting problem.
Cloning versus programming
Cloning copies an existing chip onto a new one, so the car sees the same key twice. Consequently it is quick and needs no access to the immobiliser. By contrast, programming adds a genuinely new key to the vehicle's memory. Therefore cloning suits some older platforms, whereas newer rolling-code systems require proper programming. Why a hardware-store copy will not start the car
Most cutting kiosks copy the blade and nothing else. Consequently the new key opens the door and turns the ignition but will not start the engine. Furthermore, people often assume the key is faulty when the chip was simply never programmed. Therefore any car key from 2001 onward needs a locksmith or a dealer, not a blade copier.
Older vehicles and chip generations
Early transponders from the 2000s are straightforward and inexpensive. Meanwhile mid-generation chips added rolling codes and longer programming sequences. Consequently the year matters more than the badge. Additionally, some platforms need a PIN derived from the VIN before programming can start.
