How it works
Access control removes physical keys from the equation and replaces them with credentials you can revoke instantly. Moreover it logs who entered and when. Urban Locksmith installs and services access control across Ottawa, always with a mechanical fallback where the fire code permits.
- Step 1
Access mapped
Who, which doors, and at what hours.
- Step 2
Hardware chosen
Fob, card, code or phone credential.
- Step 3
Egress checked
Because exits must open without power.
- Step 4
Installed and handed over
Including how to add and revoke users.
What access control actually solves
Keys cannot be revoked, only collected. Consequently a departing employee who does not return one creates a problem you can only fix by rekeying. By contrast, a credential is disabled in seconds. Furthermore, access can be limited by time, so a cleaner's fob works only in the evening. Therefore the benefit is control rather than convenience alone.
Cards, fobs, codes and phones
Fobs suit most workplaces because they attach to a keyring and get carried anyway. Meanwhile cards double as ID badges. By contrast, codes need nothing physical but get shared, which undermines the audit trail. Additionally, phone credentials avoid handing out anything at all. Consequently the right choice depends on how disciplined the workplace is rather than which is newest.

Why the fallback matters
Electric hardware fails differently from mechanical hardware. Maglocks drop on power loss, controllers occasionally lose programming, and strikes stick. Therefore Urban Locksmith fits a mechanical override wherever the fire code allows. Consequently a dead controller becomes an inconvenience rather than a building nobody can enter. Above all, life safety comes before the access log.
Fire code and egress
Any door on an escape route must open from inside without a key, a code or power. Consequently maglocks need a request-to-exit device and a fail-safe power arrangement. Furthermore, a locked exit is a serious compliance problem as well as a danger. Therefore we design around egress first and convenience second, and we say so if a request cannot be done compliantly.
Questions about access control systems
Can we revoke a fob instantly?
Yes. Consequently a departing employee is handled in seconds rather than by rekeying.
What happens in a power cut?
Depends on the hardware. Therefore we design with a fallback and an egress device.
Can access be limited by time?
Yes. A cleaner's credential can work evenings only.
Do you service systems you did not install?
Usually. However, some proprietary controllers are locked to their installer.
Is it compliant with fire code?
It must be. Consequently exits always open from inside without power.
