How it works
Aluminium storefront doors are their own discipline. Narrow stiles, mortise cylinders, hook bolts and pivots behave nothing like a residential door. Urban Locksmith services storefront hardware across Ottawa, from a sticking cylinder to a door that no longer sits square.
- Step 1
Door checked first
Because sagging causes most lock faults.
- Step 2
Pivot or keeper adjusted
Often the real fix, not the lock.
- Step 3
Cylinder or bolt replaced
Narrow stile parts carried on the van.
- Step 4
Locked and tested
Trading again the same visit, usually.
Why storefront doors are different
The lock sits in a stile barely two inches wide. Consequently the hardware is narrow, specific and not interchangeable with residential fittings. Furthermore, most storefront doors pivot rather than hinge, so the entire door can drop over time. Therefore a lock that stops engaging is frequently a door alignment problem rather than a lock fault at all.
Hook bolts and deadlatches
Narrow stile doors typically use a hook bolt that swings out and grabs the keeper. Consequently a small misalignment stops it catching. Meanwhile deadlatches hold the door during trading and lock properly after hours. Additionally, both wear at the keeper rather than the bolt. Therefore adjusting or replacing the keeper often restores operation cheaply.

Pivots, thresholds and dropped doors
A storefront door hangs on a top and bottom pivot. Over years the bottom pivot wears and the door sags. Consequently it scrapes the threshold and the lock stops meeting the keeper. Furthermore, people then force the door, which accelerates everything. Therefore replacing a worn pivot frequently fixes several apparent problems at once.
Getting you trading again
A shop that cannot lock cannot close, and one that cannot open cannot trade. Consequently storefront faults are urgent regardless of the hour. Urban Locksmith carries common mortise cylinders and hook bolt parts on the van. Therefore most storefront calls finish in one visit. Naturally unusual or proprietary hardware sometimes needs ordering, and we say so immediately.
