How it works
Car key replacement used to mean a tow and a dealer appointment. However, that is rarely necessary now. Urban Locksmith cuts keys to your VIN and programs them to the vehicle wherever it is parked, across 46 makes and model years from 2001 onward.
- Step 1
Call with the details
Make, model, year, and where it is parked.
- Step 2
Ownership checked
Registration or insurance slip, every time.
- Step 3
Cut to VIN
Not copied from a worn key.
- Step 4
Programmed on site
Paired to the immobiliser at the vehicle.
How a replacement key is made
First the key code is retrieved against your VIN. Then the blade is cut to that code rather than copied from a worn key. Finally the transponder or fob is programmed to the immobiliser. Consequently the new key matches the lock precisely. Furthermore, cutting to code avoids the compounding wear that makes copied keys fail after a few generations.
Spare key or all keys lost
Adding a spare while you still hold a working key is the quick case. By contrast, all keys lost means retrieving the code first, which takes longer and costs more. Therefore the single best piece of advice is to make a spare before you need one. Moreover some platforms impose a security delay during all-keys-lost, so allow extra time.

Locksmith versus dealership
A dealer will make you a key, but the vehicle usually has to reach them. Consequently a tow gets added to the bill. Meanwhile Urban Locksmith comes to the car. Furthermore, independent pricing is generally lower on comparable work. However, a small number of newer platforms remain dealer-locked, and we say so on the phone rather than after arriving.
What we need before starting
Proof the vehicle is yours: registration, an insurance slip or ownership papers. Additionally photo ID. Furthermore, the make, model and year help us arrive prepared, and the VIN helps though we can read it from the car. Above all, this check is not optional. A locksmith who skips it will make keys for other people's vehicles too.
