How it works
Motorcycle keys get lost more often than car keys, because they live in jacket pockets rather than bags. Consequently riders end up stranded more frequently than drivers. Urban Locksmith cuts and programs motorcycle keys across Ottawa, at the bike.
- Step 1
Make, model and year
Because immobiliser fitment varies by year.
- Step 2
Ownership checked
Registration or insurance, as with any vehicle.
- Step 3
Key cut
Decoded from the lock where possible.
- Step 4
Programmed if needed
Immobiliser paired and tested.
Bikes with and without immobilisers
Older motorcycles use a plain mechanical key, so cutting alone gets you riding. By contrast, most bikes from the mid-2000s onward carry an immobiliser chip. Consequently they need programming as well as cutting. Furthermore, systems like HISS on Honda and the Yamaha immobiliser each behave differently. Therefore we confirm the model year before quoting.
Reading the code from the lock
Motorcycles rarely have a spare key hidden anywhere useful. Consequently code retrieval matters more than on cars. However, bike ignition locks can often be decoded directly, which produces a correct key without manufacturer data. Additionally, seat and pannier locks frequently share the same key, so we check those too.

Seat locks, panniers and steering locks
A single bike key typically operates the ignition, the steering lock, the seat and any luggage. Consequently a lost key locks you out of everything at once. Furthermore, some manufacturers use a separate lower-security key for panniers. Therefore we ask what your original key operated, so the replacement covers all of it.
Scooters and off-road machines
Scooters follow the same logic as motorcycles, though many use simpler locks. Meanwhile ATVs, snowmobiles and personal watercraft often use very basic keys that are quick and cheap to reproduce. Consequently powersports keys are usually among the least expensive jobs we do. Naturally that changes if an immobiliser is fitted.
