How it works
A car door that will not lock, will not unlock, or will not open from inside has one of a handful of faults. Consequently diagnosis matters more than parts. Urban Locksmith repairs car door locks, actuators and latches across Ottawa at the vehicle.
- Step 1
Fault isolated
One door or all four tells us a lot.
- Step 2
Door card removed
Access without damaging trim clips.
- Step 3
Actuator or latch replaced
Or the cylinder rebuilt if that is the fault.
- Step 4
All functions tested
Lock, unlock, inside and outside handles.
Actuator failure is the usual cause
Each door has a small motor that drives the lock. Consequently when it fails, that door stops responding to the remote while the others still work. Furthermore, a failing actuator often makes a clicking or grinding noise first. Therefore a single unresponsive door almost always points here rather than at the fob or the central locking module.
Cylinders and worn keys
On vehicles that still use a key in the door, the cylinder wears exactly as an ignition does. Consequently the key eventually needs a specific angle, then stops turning. Additionally, a forced or picked cylinder after a break-in attempt frequently binds afterwards. Therefore we rebuild or replace the cylinder and cut a fresh key to match.

Latches, handles and frozen doors
A door that will not open from inside usually has a broken handle linkage rather than a lock fault. Meanwhile a door that will not shut properly points at the latch itself. Furthermore, Ottawa winters freeze latches solid, and forcing them breaks plastic components. Therefore we check the mechanical path before condemning anything electrical.
When it is the module, not the door
If every door stopped working at once, the fault is upstream. Consequently the central locking module, wiring or a fuse is the likely cause rather than four simultaneous actuator failures. Additionally, wiring in the door jamb flexes thousands of times and eventually breaks. Therefore we test the harness before replacing hardware that may be perfectly sound.
