How it works
Card and fob readers are the most common form of access control, and for good reason. They are quick, cheap per user, and everyone understands them. Urban Locksmith installs proximity readers across Ottawa and sets up the user management so you can run it yourself.

At the doors that need control.
- Step 2
Credentials issued
Cards, fobs, or both on one system.
- Step 3

So adding and removing users needs no call.
- Step 4

Including egress on every exit route.
How proximity credentials work
A fob or card holds a number that the reader passes to a controller. Consequently the door opens only if that number is on the permitted list. Furthermore, nothing sensitive lives in the fob itself, so a lost one is disabled rather than dangerous. Therefore the security depends on how promptly you remove departed users rather than on the plastic.
Cards versus fobs
Cards print with a photo and name, so they double as visible ID. Meanwhile fobs are smaller, tougher and attach to a keyring. Consequently fobs suit trades and warehouses where cards get bent. By contrast, offices with visitor policies often prefer cards for the visual check. Additionally both can run on the same reader, so a mixed deployment is perfectly workable.

Managing users without calling us
Adding and removing people should not require a service visit. Consequently Urban Locksmith hands over the management interface and shows you how to use it. Moreover we leave written notes rather than relying on the walkthrough being remembered. Therefore day-to-day changes stay in your hands, and we get called only for hardware.
Older credential formats
Some legacy card formats can be cloned trivially with cheap equipment. Consequently a system installed fifteen years ago may offer less protection than assumed. Therefore we check what format your existing readers use before extending a system. Naturally we say plainly if an upgrade is warranted, and equally plainly if the existing kit is fine.
Questions about card reader and fob entry

Fobs for durability, cards for visible ID. Moreover both can run on one reader.
Can a fob be copied?
Older formats, yes. Consequently we check what yours uses before extending it.
Can we add users ourselves?
Yes. We hand over the software and written notes.
What if someone loses a fob?
Disable it in seconds. Therefore no rekeying is needed.
Can it integrate with our existing system?
Often, depending on the controller. We check first.
