Sliding patio doors are the weakest exterior door on most Ottawa homes. The factory latch is usually a hook that engages a thin strip of aluminium. Consequently a secondary lock does far more here than an upgraded cylinder would elsewhere.

Why the factory latch is not enough
Most sliding doors ship with a single hook latch pressed into thin frame material. Consequently a firm pull often defeats it. Furthermore, many sliders can be lifted out of the track entirely, because the rollers sit in a shallow channel. Therefore two separate problems need solving: preventing the panel sliding, and preventing it lifting. A single upgraded latch addresses only the first.
Secondary locks and foot bolts
A foot bolt drops a pin into the track and physically blocks the panel. Similarly, a top-mounted pin lock prevents both sliding and lifting. Meanwhile a bar across the track works but must be removed each time, so people stop using it. Consequently Urban Locksmith usually recommends a fixed secondary lock over a removable bar. Because the best security measure is the one you actually engage.

Anti-lift hardware
Adjusting the roller height reduces the gap above the panel. Consequently lifting becomes harder. Additionally, screws driven into the upper track act as physical stops without affecting normal operation. Therefore a few minutes of adjustment often improves matters considerably before any hardware is bought. Naturally we do that first, because free improvements come before paid ones.
Glass is still glass
No lock stops a determined person with a brick. Therefore the honest framing is deterrence and delay rather than prevention. However, most opportunistic entries are quiet, and breaking glass is not. Consequently a slider that resists a silent pull is meaningfully safer than one that does not, even though the pane remains vulnerable. Above all, we would rather say that plainly than oversell hardware.
